WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Three to six motor-cyclists from the Hunter Region

We will average 400 kms per day stopping at as many

Rider Notes: Overview
The purpose of this brief note is to provide
an introduction to riders to the Rotary Ride Around Australian Against Malaria
(RRAAAM).
The Rotary Club of Williamtown under the
guidance of Rotary Australia World Community Services (RAWCS), Rotarians
against Malaria (RAM) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) is carrying out a
ride around Australia to raise funds and awareness to support the eradication
of Malaria in Papua New Guinea. The ride is being referred to as operation “Buzz off”.
Guidelines
1. The Manager of Project “Buzz Off” is Steve Carroll (0408 884 327) and as
such Steve is the sole group spokesman for all media matters.
2. The Ride Manager is Grahme Rayner 0416 141 457.
3. Grahme will lead the ride, set the pace and has scheduled the ride to
meet a series of pre-booked engagements.
4. The ride will cover an estimated 15,000kms as such the ride management
program available from Grahme, has lay days and rest days built in to allow
riders the opportunity for pre-booked bike servicing.
5. Riders should liaise with the Grahme to manage service requirements
while experience tells us that tyre wear, often an overlooked maintenance item
is worthy of special mention. Wet weather, hot weather, punctures and bald
tyres make for a poor recipe.
6. Riders doing the whole of the trip should expect to spend some $5,000
over a period of 55 days on the road assuming no major breakdowns. The ride
timetable is governed by pre-booked appointments as such there is limited
capacity for unscheduled delay.
7. Segment riders should budget for outgoings of at least $100 a day plus
accommodation.
8. Each rider is expected to carry their own needs, there is limited space
in the support vehicle trailer for additional items.
9. The ride management plan will issue after our coordination
meeting of the 28th January.
o
Riders should pay
particular attention to the limited accommodation options on offer. Apart from camping grounds with shower
and toilet facilities little other infrastructure is planned.
o
The plan addresses
the planned provision of meals, riders should note the gaps in meals and the
options on offer.
o
For the nights of the
scheduled speaking engagements we expect local Rotary support in the form of a
B-B-Q or equivalent for the other evenings the team is not planning on the
provision of group utensils and will be relying of the use of local camping
facilities this means that riders will be providing their own food and the shopping
opportunities in the ride program need to be noted.
o
The ride duration is
close to two months two months of medication, special dietary needs to
allergies will need planned attention please ensure Grahme has early warning of
any requirements.
o
The ride management
program includes a rider checklist it should be considered a minimum
requirement for those experienced in overnight camping out in a swag.
o
It is recommended
that riders give serious consideration to the bike recovery insurance policy
that Grahme has been able to negotiate.
10. While each rider will have attended to their respective health insurance
needs an area often overlooked is Ambulance cover, riders are reminded to check
they each have this cover in place.
11. While ride incidents will often be covered by a variety of insurances,
the ride organisers and Rotary recognise that there is the possibility of some
gaps and require that all riders including segment participants sign an
indemnity waiver in favour of organisers and Rotary, the waiver should be read
and understood and is more than a mere formality.
12. The ride will be managed under a Ride Management Plan being compiled by
Grahme. Each rider should study subsequent
revisions of the plan as they are issued and raise any potential issues or
areas they believe overlooked. A
comprehensive plan should ensure an enjoyable time for all involved.
13. Fund raising will be undertaken by the Rotary Club supporting the ride
in each location who are likely to make donations direct to RAWCS. Donations can also be accepted by Steve
Carroll and Grahme Rayner who will issue receipts and account for the funds
through a special purpose bank account established through the Williamtown
Rotary Club.
14. Donations are tax deductable, tax deductable receipts will be issued at
the conclusion of the ride provided the donor has provided a name and e-mail
address to which the receipt can be forwarded.
As the ride date gets closer there may be additional briefing notes
issued, our objective is to provide early advice and have riders fully informed
prior to commencement.
You can join us at any time and ride with us for two hours, two days or two weeks,
